Carers’ Week is just around the corner! – 5 to 11 June – Go colourful for Carers!

This week celebrates and recognises the vital contribution made by the UK’s 5.7 million Carers – over 148,341 in Kent.
A Carer is someone who, unpaid, looks after a relative or friend, who due to physical or mental illness, age-related difficulties, disability, or an addiction, cannot manage without their support.
Three in 5 of us will become a Carer at some point in our lives. It can happen at any time and to anyone, and it has a huge impact on a person’s life.
This year’s theme is ‘Recognising and supporting Carers in the community’ so we, Carers’ Support East Kent, will be out and about across the whole of East Kent raising awareness of Carers and our services giving support. It is important that we help identify Carers so that they can access information and support.
Caring will affect most of us at some point in our lives, it can happen gradually or overnight. Caring has a huge impact on a person’s life and their own health and wellbeing.
1 in 7 people now juggle work alongside caring, with on average 600 people a day leaving work to care. The Carer’s Leave Bill is now just a few steps away from becoming law and will see Carers given a landmark new right to take up to five days off work as unpaid Carer’s leave. Being a Carer is like having a whole other job on top of a regular job and other family commitments, hobbies or interests.
Individuals, Carers, friends, family, community groups and organisations and local businesses can all get involved to recognise and celebrate Carers and show support. If you are interested, do get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.

You may not think of yourself as a Carer, but if you look after a relative or friend who can’t manage without your support you are a Carer and our services are for you.
